Mason Girls Stay Hot With 2 6-Goal Wins
By Mike Hume
When your goalie scores, you know your offense is clicking. And indeed there has been no shortage of offense in the past few games for the George Mason High School girls soccer team. Starting last week with a 6-0 shutout against Manassas Park, the Mustangs rolled to a pair of dominant victories, the second coming this Tuesday with a 6-1 win on the road over Madison High School.
The offensive surge against Manassas Park was highlighted by a goal-scoring header by Rachel Sweeney off a corner kick by Katie Turner and a second goal by Sweeney, as she took a punt from George Mason goalie Alex Pender to the net for the score, giving the goaltender an assist. Pender would later score her own goal, after being inserted into the game as a forward. Alison Penland, Jessica Oxley and Roxanne Sweeney rounded out the scoring for the Mustangs.
In all it was an overwhelming and relentless performance by GMHS, as Manassas only breached the mid-field line five times during the entire 80-minute match while the Mustangs unleashed a torrent of 26 shots on goal.
Mason didn’t ease up a week later as they battered Madison on the road. Penland led the way with two tallies, while Christina Kirkbride curved in a corner kick off of the keeper for another score. Meanwhile the tight defense of Amanda Harrington, Haley Wood, Roxanne Sweeney and Turner, along with Pender in net never allowed Madison into the game.
Saturday’s scheduled match against Clarke County was rained out and will be made up at a later date. The Mustangs next face Rappahannock County Friday as they continue their quest to bring home the Bull Run District Championship.
