Falls Church High School Competes in Science Olympiad
Last Saturday, 12 Falls Church High School students competed in the 2004Virginia State Science Olympiad at Fairfax High School.
Competing for Falls Church were students Phi Luoung (Jr.), Thu-Thao Ly (Jr.), Jackie Jen (Jr.), Eric Gross (Jr.), Krystal Tran (Jr.), Andrew Flemming (Sr.), Chris Cassidy (Fr.), Eun Jee Yang (Fr.), Brandt Jeffers (Jr.), Whitney Misch (Jr.), Andrew Moy (Sr.), and Honey Varma (Sr.).
The Chemistry Team consisting of Phi Luong and Thu Thao Ly won the silver medal in “Qualitative Analysis” which involved, among other things, identifying unknown white-powder substances using their chemical analysis skills.
Marshall High School Excels at TechMUN Conference
At the April 16-17 TechMUN, hosted by Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, the George C. Marshall High School team sent 21 students.
Of the 20 eligible for awards, 19 won individual awards. Marshall received the Secretary General’s Award for Outstanding School; team members individually won four “Gavels” (first place), six “Outstanding” (2nd place), nine “Honorable Mention” (3rd place).
The winners were:
Gavel: Prashanth Parameswaram, Elfadil Ibrahim Eltigani, Sylvie Reydams, Tishan Mahfuz
Outstanding: Jack Schrader, Catherine Nguyen, Alyssa Katz, Kira Topik, Dema al-Kakhan, Ramy Abdel-Nabi
Honorable Mention: Red Daly, Maya Renfro, Litic Murali, Alex Mandell, Alena Golovchenko, Gloria Kwong, Howard O, Jason Heath, Jeff Genota
Also named as part of the Outstanding School team were Melanie Quillen and Frank Bellamy.
So far this season, 39 individual team members have won some speaker award, and several more than one. The team has been called to the winner’s circle 73 times.
Still to come in 2004: April 30-May 1 are the GU National Model Arab League championships and on May 1 is the Bishop Ireton HS MUN Conference.

Zoe VanGelder of Marshall High School placed second in the Environmental Sciences category at the Virginia State Science and Engineering Fair held April 17 at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland.
