Shaw's 2 'Cicada Cycles'

A SUNNY DAY on the grounds of the Mt. Daniel Elementary School Monday served as the perfect occasion to honor the departing Falls Church Superintendent of Schools Mary Ellen Shaw with a redbud tree planted in her honor. The kindergarten and first grade student body was on hand for the ceremony, providing some musical entertainment and choreography shown here. Ms. Shaw recounted how she began her career in the Falls Church public schools as a teacher at Mt. Daniel 34 years ago in 1970. She fell in love with the school when she rode up the hill to see its beautiful environment. It was also the year of the 17-year cicadas, she recalled. Thus, with the cicadas due to return next month, she will have completed two "cicadas cycles" with the school system. Shaw is shown smiling at the right foreground of this picture. More pictures of Arbor Day activities are elsewhere in this edition. (News-Press photo)
