George C. Marshall Marketing Students Rock Norfolk
George C. Marshall High School’s Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) had an outstanding finish at the Virginia State Leadership Conference held this past weekend in Norfolk, Virginia.

Over 1,700 Marketing students from across the state gathered to compete at the Annual State Leadership Conference. G.C. Marshall DECA is very proud of their 20 competitors who won the honor to represent Virginia DECA and will compete at the International Career Development Conference in Nashville, Tennessee in May.

The following students finished first in their events and will be going on to compete nationally:

Marshall High is extremely proud of all their students that participated in the conference. Marshall DECA will have one of the largest chapter delegations representing Virginia DECA in May at the National Leadership Development Conference.

Marshall High School and Academy offers marketing classes in Fashion Marketing, Sports & Entertainment Marketing, Marketing 1, Fundamentals and Advanced Marketing, as well as Internet Marketing and Hotel/Hospitality Marketing. The four marketing teachers Kim Galeano, Pam Gravitte, Mary Ellen McCormick and Stephen Moody all serve as DECA Advisors along with their Administrator Paul Wardinski.

Two George C. Marshall Students Win National Achievement Scholarships

Mai Hassan and Desmond Torkornoo of Marshall High School were among 800 students nationwide who have won Achievement Scholarships from the National Achievement Scholarship program (NASP). The Achievement Scholarships are awarded to Black American high school seniors to be used for undergraduate study at any regionally accredited United States college or university.

Torkornoo received a $2,500 National Achievement Scholarship supported by the National Merit Scholarship Corportation (NMSC), while Hassan received a $2,500 scholarship sponsored by Rohn and Haas Company.

The National Achievement Scholarship program is a privately financed competition founded in 1964 specifically to honor outstanding Black American young people and to increase their opportunities for higher education. The program is conducted by NMSC, a not-for-profit organization. The two types of scholarships in this announcement are funded by approximately 60 corporate organizations and professional associations and by NMSC.

Falls Church High Med Tech Classes Excel at State Conference

Congratulations to the Med Tech Classes from Falls Church High School who participated in the annual Virginia HOSA State Leadership Conference this past weekend.

Thirty-six students overall participate in the conference. FCHS' Chapter 44 was recognized for being one of the largest chapters at the event.

Here are some of the winners: Dan Tran (1st Place Medical Terminology, 1st Place HOSA Bowl), Van Nguyen (4th Place Medical Math), Krystal Tran (4th Place Nutrition, 1st Place HOSA Bowl), Gina Mapou (2nd Place Pharmacology), Thu-Thao Ly (3rd Place Pharmaco-logy), Alex Brudno (4th Place Rescue Breathing, 3rd Place Speaking Skills), Joyce Balinang (4th Place Extemporaneous Speaking), Allman Rollins (1st Place Researched Persuasive Speaking), Adam Magill and Miguel Acevedo (1st Place HOSA Bowl), Christina Nguyen, Kimmy Pham, Diana Luong and Emily Ngo (3rd Place Creative Problem Solving), Marinie Wijewesekera and Ji-Hye Hur (3rd Place Career Health Display), Faiza Salaheen, Shehar Banu and Thu-Thao Ly (3rd Place Medical Reading), Kathleen Hidalgo, Edrick Ramos, Esther Le and David Le (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th Place National Healthcare Exam respectively).
