Dominion Deli

Restaurant Spotlight of the Week

By Jody Fellows

Taking a look around the Dominion Deli, one can't help but wonder the identities of the various people featured in the portraits adorning the walls. Though, if you stick around, you just might recognize one or two of the faces coming in and out of the place, or perhaps even sitting at the table next to you. That's because the pictures are of the many loyal customers that have frequented and continue to frequent this favorite neighborhood deli.

"We have a lot of regulars," says owner Jim Allenchey, "we get to know who you are quickly." A statement that is validated countless times as customers wave and say "hi" to Allenchey as they stop in to grab a bite to eat. A quick glance at the menu gives another example as Dave's Special Club (Turkey Breast, Virginia Glazed Ham, Swiss, Lettuce, Tomato, Mayo on Rye) and Mark's Special (Grilled Smoked Turkey, Provolone, Lettuce, Tomato, Mayo on a Sub with Honey Mustard on the side) pay tribute to two of the deli's patrons.

There's no shortage of options on the menu here, as there are well over 100 items to choose from. There are sandwiches, both hot and cold, triple decker clubs, steak and specialty subs, burgers, salads, hot dogs, plenty of veggie options, and a wide variety of sides, appetizers and desserts. And if you can't quite find that something that your stomach is calling for, you can always create your own, opting for their "Deli Corner," which allows you to choose your own sub or sandwich combination. "The Reuben, the steak and cheese, the triple decker sandwiches, all of [the menu], it's all very good," says Allenchey. One bite and you can't help but agree.

There's a homemade quality to the food served here and it's backed up by the fact that Dominion makes all their own soups and chicken salad, roasts the turkey themselves and bakes their own cakes. A few years ago, as food prices increased, Allenchey was faced with a choice: change the quality of the food or increase the prices. "It was a no brainer," he says matter-of-factly. So the prices increased. However, a flip through the menu shows no real sign of inflation as all the selections are reasonably priced.

In addition to the bounty that appears on the regular menu, the Dominion Deli also offers a breakfast menu that is available until 11 a.m. on weekdays and 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. And this isn't some weak breakfast selection, serving just eggs and toast. Dominion offers a complete array of breakfast fare including omelettes (try the Miller Filler-- egg whites, ham and cheese served with strawberries), sandwiches (eggs, jalapenos, onions, tomatoes, and sausage on a Pita make up the Huevos Rancheros), French toast, plenty of breakfast platters and much, much more. If you're looking to start of your day with a real meal, try the Kielbasa & Eggs, a filling portion of kielbasa, eggs, garlic mashed potatoes and toast.

Dominion Deli also offers a full catering menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner and will deliver "whenever and wherever" you need them to. Offering breakfast buffets, deli meat, cheese, sandwich and salad platters, box lunches, desserts and more, they are more than ready to handle your next function.

"We are a neighborhood deli," says Allenchy, "a great place for sandwiches, soups and salads."

Now honestly, is there really anything better than that?
