As both Junior Varsity squads traveled to Clarke County on Monday and Tuesday nights to play in their respective championship games, both varsity teams at George Mason High School hosted playoff games against Rappahannock on the same nights.
Monday night, the girls team, led by 19 points from senior Becky Roa and a season-high 19 from forward Alex Pender, dominated the Panthers from start to finish in a 56-25 rout.
Already up 31-13, Roa keyed a massive 18-4 run in the third quarter that put the game completely out of reach. Each team used every player on their bench and all but four Mustangs scored.
The win put the third-seeded Mustangs in a matchup at second-seeded Clarke County last night, the result of which was too late for this edition. The Mustangs narrowly missed being the second seed in the district. They split their games with Clarke and the two shared the same single-season record, but the Eagles defeated district champs Strasburg, thus earning the higher seed.
“If we get there, we believe we can take Strasburg for a complete 32 minutes,” said coach Dan Wilkie.
