'Stangs Win 3; Cohe Breaks Pin Record

Last Saturday, George Mason High School hosted a six team dual match wrestling tournament—the largest of the season—in which the team won three team matches, Mac Cohe broke the school record for pins in a season, and Colin Ehmer and Nick Pitas finished with a perfect 5-0 day.

The Mustangs won matches against group AAA and Arlington neighbor Yorktown and group A high schools Fauquier and Northumberland.

Before the action began, Mason took time to honor their senior wrestlers: Devlan Melancon, Andrew Hipolit, Tim Quintyn, Colin Ehmer_____________ and the senior managers Haley Chrisco and Kory Lloyd.

In the first round, the Mustangs faced off against the McLean Highlanders in a tough loss, 49-28. Mason pulled their act together in the next round and defeated Yorktown by the solid score of 43-24.

Despite having lost to Fauquier last season, the Mustangs won on Saturday, 42-33. The other win was a 42-29 defeat of Northumberland. Mason lost to Parkview, 42-24.

Individually, the Mustangs were led by senior Colin Ehmer (140 lbs.) and sophomore Nick Pitas (112 lbs.) who both won all five of their matches recording three and four pins respectively. They were closely followed by senior Mac Cohe (171 lbs.) and junior John Sullivan (160 lbs.), who each won four matches for the Mustangs.

Additionally, Cohe recorded two pins which put his season pin total to 17, breaking the former school record of 16 which was set by GM Assistant Coach John Henry Pitas in 2002.

Seniors Devlan Melancon (145 lbs.), Andrew Hipolit (189 lbs.) and Tim Quintyn (275 lbs.) and sophomore Michael Coleman (125 lbs.) all won three matches for the Mustangs. Other wrestlers winning matches were senior Mike Cummings (152 lbs.), and sophomores Kristin Schwind (119 lbs.) and Tashdid Kahn (130 lbs.). Senior Zach Schwind (152 lbs.) and sophomore Trevor Quillin (135 lbs.) rounded out the varsity lineup for the day.

On Wednesday, February 4, the Mustang wrestlers traveled to Clarke County for their fourth district dual, defeating the Eagles 43-27—the first time Mason has ever defeated Clarke, currently the fifth-ranked team in the state in group A.

Also, the win improved the Mustangs’ district record to 3-1 with one district dual remaining.

Winners for the Mustangs on the day were seniors Colin Ehmer (140 lbs.), Devlan Melancon (145 lbs.), Mike Cummings (152 lbs.), Mac Cohe (189 lbs.), Andrew Hipolit (215 lbs.), and Tim Quintyn (275 lbs.), and sophomores Nick Pitas (112 lbs.), Tashdid Kahn (130 lbs.), and Bob Bumgarner (171 lbs.).

The Mustangs’ final match of the regular season was last night and the result of which was too late for this edition. Mason was at Strasburg taking on the Rams and Region B rivals Buffalo Gap and Stonewall Jackson at Strasburg.

The Bull Run District tournament will also be held at Strasburg High School on Saturday, February 21.
