Florance Schultz Murphy, a former resident of Falls Church, died December 26, 2003.
Florence was born and grew up in Albany, NY. Florence and Ed Murphy first moved from Albany to Richmond, Va. in 1960 and then to Falls Church in 1965. They both fell in love with the city and were delighted to become part of the community so close to Washington, DC.
She was a founding member of the Village Preservation & Improvement Society (VPIS) and was a longtime member of its board. She served as co-chair of the annual VPIS attic treasure sale for many years. She was also a volunteer at the Orange Crate, the Falls Church Humane Society thrift shop.
Florence was also a member of the National Women’s Democratic Club, the League of Women Voters and the Falls Church Women’s Club. Ed and Florence were both members of the Falls Church bicentennial committee in 1976. They were active in St. James parish with Ed serving as a collection counter for many years and Florence as a member of the Women of St. James.
They had two daughters, Karen and Justine, four grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Florence spent the last seven years living in Pennsylvania, near her daughter. She also returned each year to visit with her many relatives in Albany to her beloved Burden Lake, the vacation home of the Schultz family built by her father. She will be buried in Falls Church with her husband.
Kathryn S. Blowers, age 91 of 102 Stone Ridge Village, Myerstown (formerly of Hersehy, Pa.), died Friday, January 23, 2004 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Lebenon, Pa. Blowers was a long-time volunteer at the Humane Society in Falls Church.
She was the wife of the late John R. Blowers, who died October 28, 2003.
Born October 7, 1912 in Bethlehem, Pa., daughter of the late Herman & Estella May Moll Seltmann, she was a member of Resurrection Lutheran Church in Arlington, Va. She is survived by one son, John Russell Blowers; two grandchildren, Tarik Grant Blowers and Issa Juliet Blowers; one brother, Richard T. Seltmann; one niece, Jean McMahon; and one sister-in-law, Dorothy Kingren.
