Meredith Hamme did it not once, but twice—sinking two buzzer beaters to keep the George Mason Mustangs’ hopes alive during their scintillating 50-44 triple-overtime win at Strasburg on Thursday. The win moved the Mustangs to 10-2 overall on the year and put them atop the Bull Run District.
Hamme played second fiddle for most of the game to Ashley Thompson, who led the team in scoring and rebounding, finishing with 22 and 12. “She really dominated tonight,” said coach Carlyn Kruder, referring to Thompson.
But when the team needed a big shot, it turned to Hamme. With Mason trailing 44-42 in the second overtime, the team called a timeout with the ball at halfcourt and Kruder drew up a set play in the huddle. After a few lengthy looks, Hamme was left open under the basket on the far block and she grabbed the long inbound pass with just enough time to lay it in for two.
In the overtime, Hamme and Mary Kate Cummings made clutch free-throws to seal the win for the Mustangs.
“It gave everybody a bit of momentum,” said varsity head coach Dan Wilkie. “I’m hoping our girls can ride off a little of it.”
The JVs next matchup is at home tonight against Manassas Park.
