Grapplers Dominate Potomac; Host 4-Team Tourney Saturday

The Mustangs home opener was a quad match in which three other teams came to wrestle against GMHS including the number 1 ranked Virginia Group A team Manassas Park, the number five ranked Virginia private school Bishop Ireton and Potomac School. The Mustangs first took on Potomac School who they dominated losing only one match and winning by a final score of 58-6. They next wrestled Manassas Park who, with a stacked lineup, beat the Mustangs soundly by the score of 57-16 despite several very close matches with highly ranked opponents. The Mustangs finished the evening with a very tight team match with Bishop Ireton in which the final team score came down to the last individual bout with the Mustangs coming up short in a loss 39-31.

Individually, seniors Andrew Hipolit (189 lbs.) and Mac Cohe (171 lbs.) and sophomore Willie Hoover (140 lbs.) went undefeated on the night. Hipolit and Cohe each recorded one pin and Hoover recorded 2. Seniors Devlan Melancon (145 lbs.) and Mike Cummings (152 lbs.) and sophomore Nick Pitas (112 lbs.) all won two matches and lost a close match to a highly ranked opponent from Manassas Park. Senior Tim Quintyn (275 lbs.), junior John Sullivan (160 lbs.) and sophomores Kristin Schwind (119 lbs.), Michael Coleman (125 lbs.), Trevor Quillin (135 lbs.) and Bob Bumgarner (160 lbs.) each won an individual match.

The Mustangs next event is a home tournament on Saturday, January 17, starting at 10AM against Group AAA Falls Church and Lake Braddock, Group AA Courtland and Group A Stonewall Jackson.
